What do you enjoy most about your current position?
My favorite aspect of my position is that I am hands-on and intimately connected with the individuals and groups looking to achieve their investment goals through multifamily real estate sales and dispositions. Being that multifamily investment has so much nuance, both in valuation and execution, I appreciate the fact that I am able to provide real value to both seller and buyer clients in helping them understand business plans to maximize returns on both ends.
What is a typical day like in your position?
A typical day consists of start-to-finish deal execution, overseeing the due diligence process in all transactions, transaction analysis, production of offering memoranda, client follow-up, and networking with principles to understand their investment goals for the near and long term.
How did you find your current position?
I found my current position through a family friend who started at the same company. I used to be an analyst at the largest commercial brokerage in the county, and made the transition to the producer-side of the business in accepting my current role.
Which undergraduate experiences did you find most helpful in preparing you for your current position?
A few of my internships were incredibly valuable in preparing me for my current position, as one was research-focused and the other two were more in line with sales development. Both helped me refine my analytical and soft skills that are important in my current role.
How has your coursework helped you in your current position?
I think my upper-level Econ classes, especially the courses taught by Professor Nick Montgomery, were incredibly helpful in understanding the economic implications of development in a given area, especially as it relates to positive and negative externalities that are created (both intentionally and unintentionally) in the process. I was also a member of the CIVICUS living and learning program in my first two years at UMD, which proved to be incredibly valuable in developing my soft skills that are so critically important for my role.
Any job or internship advice for students seeking a position in your field?
Your internship(s) do not have to be directly related to the field you want to work in. If something is interesting to you, try it! I cannot stress this enough- there is plenty of time to figure out what you would like to do long term, and the only way you can do that is by trying multiple things to see what you like.
